Jobing Description
Incumbents of this position may prepare and/or review plans, specifications and estimates for construction projects; prepare and/or review reports, studies and analytical data; perform calculations relating to engineering problems; perform engineering survey; inspect construction and/or maintenance work; perform engineering duties in such areas as highways and bridges in accordance with sound engineering principals, applications, laws, regulations and standards.
Provide assistance to the Resident Engineer on all assigned projects.
Inspect materials and construction operations for conformance to MassDOT policies, standards and regulations and for conformanace to contract plans and specifications.
Calculates contract items pay quantities for contract estimates and payments.
Collects material samples and performs field tests, as required, on materials incorporated into projects.
Prepares project records, including but not limited to daily reports, quantity control reports, police detail reports.
Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the construction, inspection and/or alteration of construction projects such as highways, buildings, bridges, tunnels, sewers, waterways, dams and parks, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering, civil engineering technology or construction technology may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher Degree with a major in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, architecture, or structural, architectural or sanitary engineering may be substituted for the required experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of terminology, symbols, codes and standard abbreviations used on maps and in civil engineering projects such as the construction of highways and bridges.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in civil engineering projects.
Knowledge of inspection techniques used in civil engineering projects.
Knowledge of traffic engineering principles related to traffic control through construction projects.
Knowledge of the field methods used in sample collection for civil engineering projects.
Ability to understand, apply the law, and explain the provisions of the law, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and specifications governing assigned unit activities.
Comments:
For purposes of bargaining unit designation, Unit 9 is equivalent to MassDOT Unit E.
