Basic Qualifications

Additional Qualifications
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience and success in creating, implementing, and overseeing institutional diversity pipeline and sourcing programs within an academic environment or related preferred
  • Experience in an academic setting, higher education administration, faculty affairs, human resources, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and/or other related fields preferred
  • Proven track record of leadership and influence in advancing and increasing the acceptance rates of diverse and underrepresented student candidates and faculty preferred
  • Expertise in developing, promoting, and nurturing recruiting and retention environments supportive of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging among students, faculty, administrators, staff, and other constituents preferred
  • Experience in both domestic and global contexts preferred

Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and public communication skills, including effective messaging to multiple and diverse audiences, through multiple media formats (including oral presentation, written communication, digital communications, etc.); experience working directly with, and on behalf of, diverse students, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni to advance values of equity, diversity, and inclusion; experience acting as a collaborator and a convener, to work with judiciousness and diplomacy; experience building bridges and working toward consensus building; experience managing and accomplishing goals through a complex and fast-paced environment preferred

Duties & Responsibilities
In response to Harvard Chan's commitment to sustainable change in the increase of the diversity of faculty and graduate students, and opportunities to engage and bring all members of the Harvard Chan community together, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is seeking an Assistant Director of Diversity Outreach. The Assistant Director (AD) will help to increase awareness and create best practices and strategies to both inform and remove bias-related thoughts, which hinder the sourcing and pipeline outreach process for graduate students and faculty. The incumbent will work with the the Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging and others in ODI to identify, design, and implement new concepts for both pipeline and exchange retention programs for students and faculty.  

The Assistant Director of Diversity Outreach will report directly to the Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging; with a dotted-line to the Director of Admissions in the Office for Student Services.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Pipeline Inclusivity: Proactively identify, source, build partnerships, and initiate programs to attract and manage a pipeline of qualified students and faculty candidates -- with an emphasis on identifying new and innovative ways to attract diverse populations and specifically underrepresented minorities. 
  • Communication, Outreach, and Pipeline Sourcing: Develop coordinated, consistent marketing and branding messages, incorporating social media and networking into programs and project aspects as appropriate. The AD will also strengthen partnerships with external resources by defining, promoting and marketing benefits of participation and involvement to the organization, and creating and nurturing relationships with organizations to develop a network of enthusiastic organizations engaged via active participation in the success of related programs and projects 
  • Relationship Building: Maintain existing relationships with external colleges, communities, and networks and establish new opportunities for identifying talent, serving as the lead strategist on the complex ask of attracting, selecting, onboarding, and supporting the lasting success of a diverse community. The AD will work closely with many campus partners including the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Office of Admissions, Human Resources, Academic Council, the Dean’s Advisory Diversity Council on Diversity and Inclusion and other key stakeholders to develop and implement pilot-focused recruitment and onboarding strategies 
  • Best Practices: Build, develop, and maintain familiarity with up-to-date best practices and strategies to further develop the existing graduate student pipeline programs and networking connections 
  • Metrics: Define and track diversity and recruitment-related metrics in accordance with the diversity strategic plan
The Assistant Director of Diversity Outreach will also be responsible for special projects and/or assignments, and other related duties as required.
PLEASE NOTE: Early evening work is frequently required, as well as some weekends and overnight travel.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be an individual contributor role to start, but may have supervisory responsibility in the future.
