Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a science or related field required. Two plus years of experience in Microbiology or a related science. Education may count toward years of experience.

Additional Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred. Exposure or experience to one or more of the following areas: immunoassays, bacterial culture, experience with aseptic techniques, molecular biology, and microscopy. Proficiency with personal computers and applicable software packages (Microsoft Word, Excel) is a must.

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications for a Research Assistant position in the Bioinspired Therapeutics and Devices platform. The mission of the Wyss Institute is to discover the engineering principles that Nature uses to build living things; to pursue the high-risk research that is fundamental to advance this effort; and to harness these insights to create biologically-inspired materials and devices to advance human health and improve the environment – thereby revolutionizing clinical medicine and creating a more sustainable world.
 
The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering is seeking a motivated individual to fill a research position in microbiology. The candidate will be part of a multidiscipline team working on developing state of the art vaccines against pathogens designed to address unmet medical needs. The position includes developing processes involving the capture, detection, and quantification of pathogens from samples. The candidate will be responsible for the microbial culture, and assay of samples for both vaccine production and testing of efficacy (including body fluids, exudates, or surgical specimens). In addition, the project will involve microorganism-based assay development as part of vaccine production and efficacy testing. The person filling this position will have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of additional experimental techniques, including molecular biology, protein characterization, and microscopy. The position will require the candidate to work in a multidisciplinary team of biologist and engineers, interact in a collegial and fluid manner with other scientists and staff at the Wyss Institute, present their work at weekly meetings and write appropriate scientific articles.
